CREATIVE PURSUITS

I have always possessed varied creative interests, and below are some of my favorite pastimes, particularly doll making and singing. So, even in my spare time, I am honing my artistic skills and sensibilities in one capacity or another. The purpose of sharing these other creative pursuits is to show I can bring different types of flavor, character, and talent to a project.

Singing –  They say that showers produce some of the most fearless singers. That may be true, but some of the most fearless singers come out of people who aren’t afraid to bear their souls. I have loved to sing since a very early age and thank God every day for the ability to do so. This is why I incorporate song into my performance speeches – it lends a rawness to my delivery.

Doll making –  My mother taught me how to make dolls when I was just seven years-old. My first doll was made out of old scraps she had collected over several years; we used buttons for the eyes and black yarn for the hair. She was absolutely beautiful – both the doll as we watched her bloom, and my mother as she was teaching me how to give her life. Some might have classified my creation as a scrap doll, but I knew in my heart that every stitch of thread and every patch of pattern fell in the right place and created a memory I will carry with me through the rest of my life.

Drawing  – One of my passions in life is capturing images on paper with a pencil, ink, or other media. There is something magical that occurs when weaving the lines into all different shapes and sizes, producing a persona’s face, landscape, or simply the sun with a twist to its countenance. In addition to human portraits, I enjoy drawing animals, particularly birds, dogs, big cats, and apes.

Cooking – Some of my fondest memories were created in the kitchen while experimenting with flavors, textures, and seasonings (the spicier the better!). I enjoy anything Italian and the intoxicating flavors of Mexican, Indian, and Caribbean food as well – vegan, of course (Yes, I am a proud vegan! ~ :-)). Essentially, I just enjoy a good, filling meal with a backdrop of Smooth Jazz and moonlight.

Dancing – I absolutely love to dance! One time, I danced for – literally – three hours straight to high tempo music. Once the beat catches my soul, I’m gone and the fire is lit. I particularly love outdoor music festivals where I’m free to spin and jump on the grass as much as I desire. There is something so liberating about the grass under my bare feet and the sun shining down in approval of my moves.
